CS90SH: 90SH Spike Hawk

Cold Steel

While it's certainly capable of performing utility chores, the Cold Steel 90SH Spike Hawk really excels when it's used as a weapon. With one highly effective edge and a long spike, it puts any adversary on the horns of a fierce dilemma: Face the edge in brutal chopping, cutting, slashing and gouging attacks, or risk getting huge deep holes punched in you by the fearsome spike.

To make matters even worse for an attacker, either end of the hawk can be used to hook or trap an opponent's weapon, neck, arm or leg, to control or manipulate the situation to one's advantage. Furthermore, the overall length of the of the hawk measures 9" across making it a wide, stiff platform that can be punched into an incoming weapon arm to momentarily stop its forward motion and immobilize it.

A superbly crafted leather sheath designed to safely house the point and edge is available and sold separately.

Drop Forged Tomahawks

These superb tomahawks are precision drop forged from 1055 carbon steel. Drop forging is, without doubt, the best method of manufacture for any impact weapon, particularly one with a cutting edge. During the forging process a metal ingot is heated almost white hot and then formed into shape in a series of progressive dies. The large steel dies are fixed to enormous compressed air hammers. Each die hammers the hot metal into a gradually more finished shape. The steel is kneaded and compressed into a completely homogeneous mass making the grain structure uniform and minimizing gas pockets or other imperfections that can ruin the construction of a hand forged hawk. This is why most good axes, hatchets and hammers are drop forged. These hawks are differentially heat treated. This means that the cutting edge and hammer face is fully hardened, while the balance is left relatively soft to absorb the shock of striking blows.

Excellent tomahawk for the $$$
I bought this tomahawk knowing i was going to have to tinker around a bit with it, as i do with everything i own. From the factory the head came loose on the handle, after pounding the head down, cutting and installing wedges into the hanfle the problem was fixed. After a little sharpening this hawk was ready for the trail and it is EXCELLENT for the price. If you dont mind setting the head and sharpening yourself, go for it. Best $30 ive spent in a while.

Drop Forged?
This hawk is supposed to be drop forged. I did not like the painted finish and stripped of the painted surface to expose the bare steel. What I found was that the hawk's steel surface looks like that typically found on items that are cast, not forged. Other tell tale signs in the steel reinforce that diagnosis.

Decent
Fit and finish is ok at best. Disassembled and fitted the head to the handle with a file. Handle was a bit warped, set screw is worthless - best remove and throw away.
